Macau is a former Portuguese colony off the coast of mainland China that is quickly becoming the online casino gambling capitol of the world. According to the Hong Kong Market Watch, Macau surpassed the Las Vegas Strip in gaming revenues in 2006 by $4.5 million. Macau earned $6.95 billion in revenues in 2006; the Las Vegas Strip reported a figure of $6.5 billion. These figures are only for the Las Vegas Strip area and not for all of Clark County, which is the county where Las Vegas is located. There are other gambling areas within Clark County that aren't included in these figures.
Macau now has the title as the gambling capitol of the world that was formerly held by the Las Vegas Strip. To most people of the world the term Las Vegas means the Strip area. Macau has twenty four casinos at the present time, with more casinos and resort hotel casino complexes planned as many of the world's big internet bingo gaming companies are moving into the market there. They have a total of over 6,500 slot machines and 2,700 gaming tables. They basically serve the lucrative Far East market especially mainland China where gambling is illegal.
Macau and Las Vegas serve two different markets and many of the big names in the gambling world have casinos in both places so Las Vegas isn't being hurt by Macau. Many of the Las Vegas companies have moved into the Macau market and more are opening this summer when the Sands opens its mega resort complex with its convention and family oriented facilities. |
